Project Description

Bucolic Farm Redo2

We led the master planning and conceptual design of one the few large parcels still intact in the dense suburbs of Northern Virginia. Originally designed in 1919 to serve as a working farm, the site presented my challenges such as significant changes in grade and storm water management.

The new owners envisioned transforming this historic farm into a family retreat with ample open space and privacy to accommodate their active and child-oriented lifestyle.

This was achieved by extending the living space to the open air— creating outdoor rooms that where private and intimate for daily use, but could be also easily convert to beautiful environment for entertaining.

By skillfully using the challenging topography to create elegant steps and terraces and realigning the entry drive, distinct spaces were created for dining, lounging, and active recreation.

A tree swing places in the generous front lawn highlights the site’s natural beauty and is engulfed with a circular driveway.

A secret woodland path enhances the edges. Rain water is directed into a dry river bed planted with native plantings.
