Bucolic Farm Redo

The new owners envisioned transforming this historic farm into a family retreat with ample open space and privacy to accommodate their active and child-oriented lifestyle. This was achieved by extending the living space to the open air— creating outdoor rooms that where private and intimate for daily use, but could be also easily convert to beautiful environment for entertaining.

Backyard Haven

This terraced garden sustains native vegetation in a transformed woodland swale which supplements the natural stream bed. The "terraced garden rooms" are stabilized with a crafted plant palette coating the slopes with color. A traditional Italian fountain provides a cooling effect of the spacious courtyard. The limestone walls and steps are wide and inviting, presenting opportune seating and eloquent transition that leave the sensation of being on vacation in Tuscany.

Poolside Retreat

This spreading home on the inner skirts of the country provide an inviting entertaining space for family and friends. With the renovation of the pool, enlarged and detailed terraces, we included a custom made ping pong table, fire place seating area and outdoor living space which was ultimately combined with the existing pergola. The screen planting adds privacy and accent plantings are crafty and provide character.

Urban Plaza

For this large government building, an interior urban plaza was created to facilitate outdoor gathering and interest for workers while taking a break or eating lunch. Artificial turf provides year round greenery, while a large fountain creates pleasant background noise. The great swirl of the colored concrete provides movement for rare occasions when special vehicular traffic is required and an inviting natural flow to the ground place.

Spa Treatment

When you are tasked to provide a hot tub that looks like a pond with a waterfall that fits into its natural surroundings this is what comes to mind.  The owner also wanted an outdoor kitchen for many entertaining options.  We set the dining area in the gazebo and created and layered shrub border along the edges of the property.

Environmental Blessing

This Chesapeake Bay preservation approved garden, just south of Old Town, Alexandria sits on the banks of the Potomac River. The newly constructed home is molded after a Rhode Island cliff house offering perfect setting for the native planting. Sensitive site and landscaping improvements include shore line revetments and protected wetlands. Improvements also include terracing from the house, driveway, parking court, covered terraces, pool and dock.

Georgetown Delight

Although petite, this garden stands bold and proud. New masonry walls and columns flank the gated entrance to this property. The addition of mature sycamore and magnolia trees provided much needed additional privacy for the new entry garden. An intricate scupper fountain flows into a koi pond for a peaceful background noise. A new pergola capped outdoor dining. At the rear of the property the small existing terrace was renovated with a combination of new and salvaged paving materials. Additional outdoor furniture and garden accents ordain the space in a full Buddha motif.

Bridge Crossing

The primary purpose of this project was to solve access issues caused by the stream that passes just in front of the residence’s main entrance. We replaced the existing wood bridge with a more beautiful stone bridge and simultaneously saved two historic tulip trees. We also converted a swampy area fed by two natural springs in front of the house into a lushly-planted and beautiful pond. A vehicular turnaround and new carport allow for ample access by car, yet maintain the 19th century farm house appeal. Our philosophy was to follow all necessary guidelines with a unique twist, designing the environmental elements with a creative approach. The design intent was to create a farm house feel for everyday living.
